8 Steps to Search Engine Optimize Your Pages

April 19th, 2009

There are a number of steps I always follow when optimizing a site for SEO (note these are just the high points, there are others that I don’t mention here, but these WILL take you a long way):

1) If it's a new site, I will include the keywords in a non hyphenated domain name (if you can get a .edu or .gov Top Level Domain do so, otherwise a cheap .info will work just fine)

2) I like to rename the URL to each money page to include the main keyword for that page.

3) Implement Google Analytics for the site and ensure the tracking script is added to every page (if not already done).

4) Go through the "money" pages and make sure that the title, meta descriptions and meta keywords tags are different and optimized for the keywords on the page. In a competitive niche (over 1 million result pages in Google), I would limit the keywords to one main phrase, a couple of local modifiers and one or two more closely related terms per page.

5) Go through the non-money pages (i.e. pages you don't care about from an SEO perspective) and ensure the title and meta description tags are not duplicates of any of the money page tags. Google Webmaster tools will identify this for you once your site has been crawled.

6) I nofollow any links to overhead pages from all of the pages on the site other than the home page. I leave the home page links as follow links, since I want the SEs to index all pages on the site and having privacy, contact, disclaimer, etc overhead pages enhance Google's view of the "trust" for the site. On all other pages I want only the link to the home page to be a follow link, so I can build up the page rank of the home page. I handle this in Dreamweaver by using two different site templates, one for the home page and one for the rest of the pages on the site. If your main keyword page is something other than the home page, modify your approach accordingly.

7) I then optimize each page's content for it's main keyword, etc. It's important that each word or phrase used in the keyword META is found somewhere on the page to avoid keyword spam penalties.

8) At this point the on page optimization is complete enough to start with link building. In case you were wondering, link building is tough. I use articles, blog posts, submit forms on relevant sites, reciprocal links, etc. There are ways to short cut this process, without going black or grey hat. Picking The Perfect SEO Program For Your Website

March 26th, 2009

For the best online exposure of a product or a service, all web strategies will inevitably converge towards SEO techniques and branding eventually. A fundamental basic strategy and the choice of a SEO program represent the main players in the creation of a viable marketing scheme that enables continuity of service, access to a broader audience and a potential business expansion. Special web tools and softwares are forever present in daily web site monitoring, but they are also a must for the creation of rewarding SEO although they are often cataloged as robotic. This means that but for a good SEO program, the chances of attracting more customers to the business remain limited.

Then, there comes the necessity to rank high in search engines. The advantage of a good SEO program is that it makes the web page appear more search engine-friendly, which is immediately reflected in the page rank. Will any SEO program work? Well, be very careful and demanding with SEO tools; not all the free or fee-based softwares make the right tools for your site optimization. For small and medium business size, the ideal SEO program is one that increases relevant traffic, performs the expected SEO tasks and constantly analyzes the web page.

Then, a good SEO program gives you lots of control over the time you spend with the optimization. SEO is not something you see to now and then, it is a process that needs constant monitoring, and only with the right tools can one cover all the complex aspects of web site performance. Two possible choices are possible for the purchase of a SEO program: professional consultancy or personal documentation. Take a look over SEO software guides to learn some further stuff related to SEO software applications.

For a relevant and conclusive definition of what one should refer to by a good SEO program, let’s take the situation of someone who knows little about SEO. If you are a SEO beginner, buy a program that does most of the work for you. On the other performance extreme, the most comprehensive of programs cover extensive elements on the software disk; here, a simple comparison between two or three disks will show you which is the right web SEO tool for your business. Having said this, we can only conclude that a business can only grow only through software assistance, and the sooner you adapt the technology the more profitable it will be for business.

Why SEO?

March 26th, 2009

SEO increases the quality and the traffic rate of a web site by means of multiple techniques. The acronym SEO comes from search engine optimizer or optimization, and it stands for the work of web masters who try to make web sites captivating and appealing to search engines. SEO varies from one site to another and also depends on the target. The rules necessary to get higher on the result pages also differ between search engines. That is why there are so many SEO jobs and expertise areas in this domain.

SEO is very complex because, like anything related with technology, it is in relentless development. New smarter strategies are developed on a daily basis and one has to do a lot of research and reading to keep up with the growth rate and thus remain proficient. To a certain extent some users are satisfied with the content of as SEO book that aims to increase the business profit online. Others tend to disagree with this idea as one book would not be enough except for the moment when it was released on the market. After some time, SEO will surely have suffered modifications and marketing strategies will have changed. The book you will have relied on until then may not be so useful anymore. That is why, joining a forum and keeping in touch with other specialists willing to share their knowledge, will be more lucrative than buying books.

SEO means that the specialist you hired is well informed about what a certain search engine wants in a site. Based on this elements, she/he will adapt your site to the requirements of the search engine so that your site will be somewhere in the top positions on the displayed results page. If top position is not what your site relishes after having hired someone to carry out SEO, or if your page rank has not increased at least, it is recommended that you get a better specialist. Some say that SEO can be carried out by the site owner. But let us not confuse concepts like web designers, SEO specialists and web owners; they surely do not have to be one and the same person.

SEO Is Easy With These 5 Tips

February 26th, 2009

For the beginning Webmaster, Search Engine Optimization is is shrouded in smoke and mirrors. As a Dallas SEO it’s my belief that a lot of this is because of all the snake oil spouted out by scores of people calling their self SEO experts. Some do this because they don’t have a clue about SEO while many others do it because their Clients would stop paying them if they knew how easy it was to rank a web site. SEO isn’t rocket science my good friend. It’s nothing more than systematically building and optimizing a website the same way over and over to achieve high rankings.

To set the foundation for your website, a person should make certain the main keywords are used in the domain name if it’s possible. With everything except the domain names being equal, a web page with your keywords in the URL will outrank one without the keywords contained in the web address.

Next up, the you keywords should be added in the Title of your Website. By doing this, you’re helping search engines like Google come to a conclusion as to what the subject of your Website is.

You should also use keywords in the Title of each page or article on your site, or at the very least, some parts of a keyword phrase should be in the page Title. This has the same effect as putting keywords in the Title of your Website in that it helps the search engines come to a conclusion as to what the subject of the page is, what it’s about and how relevant it is to the search term being searched for. Plus, the Website or Blog should be designed so that the Page Title is in the H1 tag. Search engines give a great deal of value to the H1 tag and it’s important that your Page Title’s be inside H1 tags. If your Houston web designer does not know how this is done, find one that does.

You should now have those three things taken care of. Now that you do, it’s crucial that the keywords you want to rank for show up a few times in the content of the page. You should place the main keyword of the page somewhere in the first paragraph and at least once in the last paragraph. A few more times between the first and last paragraph can’t hurt but don’t over do it, in summary, just make sure you use them at the first of the article and again at the end.

Last up, the most important aspect of Website Search Engine Optimization actually takes place off your Website. In my opinion, the most important thing in in getting a higher ranking in Google is backlinks leading back to your site. And it’s not enough to just get backlinks, these backward links need to have your keywords as the Anchor text of the links back to your site.

How important are backward links? I have ranked quite a few Websites that didn’t have the keywords in the URL, plus I can rank one that doesn’t have keywords in the Website Title, Page Title and in the Content (although it’s much, much harder to do), but without targeted links back to your site pointing to the website, {it is nearly impossible} to get ranked higher for any search terms that are the least bit in demand.

Using Google Adwords Keyword Selector Tool For Effective Ad Campaign

February 11th, 2009

As you begin creating and writing compelling ads for your Google Adwords campaign, it’s important to know which keywords and keyphrases to use so that people can identify your ad with ease. Perry Marshall (a Google Adwords expert) teaches pay-per-click users and advertisers to utilize the Google Adwords Keyword Selector Tool when creating their ads. This free tool allows you to find the most profitable and popular keywords in your niche, and can also help you drill down related keywords that you can use for other campaigns or just general keyword research. The Keyword Tool is especially helpful for fine-tuning your efforts when ads are performing poorly; if you’ve written an ad using low-traffic keywords, there is a good chance that your ads are not being clicked enough to make your ad effective.

Here are some more ways to use the Google Adwords Keyword Selector Tool effectively for your Adwords campaign:

1. Begin with broad search. Many people make the mistake of using very specific keywords or keyphrases when they first begin conducting research with Google Adwords, but this can leave you with only mediocre results. Begin with broad search instead and drill down your results using the ’synonyms’ tool that offers suggestions and variations as part of the results.

2. Using a similar set of keywords, create different ad groups. Try to be certain that you are creating completely new ad groups for each campaign you create, so you can monitor what’s working - and what is not. There is a ‘relevant keywords’ feature built right into the Adwords Keyword Selector Tool (that you can use) that will make it easier for you to narrow down your search.

3. Use ‘negative keywords’. Optimizing your Adwords campaign can sometimes involve taking out the words that don’t work in your niche, the Google Adwords tool can be adjusted to not show certain words that don’t fit in your market. An example of this would be, using the negative keywords to eliminate the word “free” from triggering your ad, thus improving your ROI by only displaying your ad to people who are looking to potentially buy. The Google Adwords Keyword Selector Tool will now only show you results without the word ‘free.’

4. Use the Site Content feature if you don’t know where to start. Google can spider your website and make keyword suggestions based on the content of your pages. For example, if your home page provides information about services and trends in your marketplace, these may be strong keywords for your particular niche. When the scanning process is complete, you will see a list of highly targeted keywords related to these ideas and topics in your results.

5. Location, location, location. There are many advertisers that don’t realize how important adding geographic modifiers to your search phrase (like a city or state) really is. This can be important if you provide products or services that are geographically specific; the visitors you get from these types of phrases might be better than a less specific search, and will provide more qualified traffic to your site. Consider adding keyword phrases with location modifiers to figure out what the combinations are for your specific ad campaign.

Marketing with Google Ad Words is a powerful technique that most online-businesses can use to attract more customers. Creating quality Google Ads is one of the best skills to have when using Ad Words - and there are many quality training resources available online. .

Online Advertising for Your Offline Business

February 11th, 2009

If you run a small company with less than a dozen employees that serves mostly local customers, then you need a web presence!

More and more, your potential customers are abandoning those outdated Yellow Pages paper books for Google and other Internet search engines. It is easy and quick to do a search for “Internet Marketing Service Charlottesville VA”. If you don’t find the service you’re searching for in the city of Charlottesville, you are able to very easily widen your search to “Internet Marketing Services Waynesboro Virginia” or even “Internet Marketing Services Central Virginia”. (How much time and how many cumbersome telephone books would you need to do a broad area search like that with the Yellow Pages?)

If your local business does not utilize the net to promote itself, keep in contact with its customers, broaden its reach, and take your competitions customers, you can be sure that your competitors will do it to you… and it will happen very soon.

For many small business owners, moving from traditional OFFline marketing to the ONline world is a very hard thing to do. Many brick and mortar businesses hang on to “the way it’s always been” and reject internet marketing.

How do you move your business from “the way it’s always been done” to an net marketing mind set?

How To Take Your OFFline Business ONline…

Internet promotion does not always require a web site. Email marketing alone can make a big difference.

For a small brick and mortar company to succeed with a marketing campaign on the net would probably require the dedication (and salary) of a full time employee. Setting up a direct-response web site, getting a keyword rich domain name, search engine otimization, email marketing, article publishing, and other forms of internet promotion are time consuming tasks. Once the web site or email opt-in page are created, promotion becomes the primary task. Nonetheless, unless it is carried on on a daily basis, it may not produce the desired results.

An internet site is great, but it is easily forgotten unless it’s continually promoted and updated on a regular basis.

Employing a qualified external internet marketing firm is a smart solution for local businesses who want to add an internet presence to their marketing, but who don’t want the added work.

On the whole, crossing the offline/online gap should not be looked upon as major problem. There are firms — probably in your own town or area — that can assist. Here’s a thought…  Why not Google “Internet Marketing Yourtown Yourstate” or “Market Your Business On The World Wide Web Yourtown Yourstate” and see what you come up with? It’s the way smart business is done now!

A Few Key Points on Choosing an Ecommerce Host

January 21st, 2009

Be it big or small, business with an online interface will prove to be key players in the industry. Nevertheless, without a plan in the wide array of online marketplaces, difficulties are bound to come at lightning speeds.

If you think a website equals given traffic, you might want to open those pearly blues a little wider. Especially when your pockets don’t run deep enough to cover search engine marketing and being able to develop the software that gets your website ranked highly with search engines such as Google and MSN, you will become stuck in a rut.

To help you overcome these unfortunate mishaps there are web hosting companies that can lend a hand to even the smallest companies to gain their needed and well-deserved exposure. Before starting any type of marketing, you must of course know whom you are targeting and what you want to do in terms of attracting customers to your website.

Your task in this matter is finding just the Ecommerce host that would fit your needs. What you probably think is how you are going to go about it? Selecting an appropriate provider can be a bit cumbersome. Therefore, I have just the tips for you to understand what we actually mean.

The bandwidth that your host is offering should allow your visitors to download anything they want in a jiffy. This also includes smooth collection of the visitor’s registration forms, sensitive data like credit card information, etc. If your provider provides a 45mbps line connection, you can be assured that you are good hands.

Many ecommerce companies are simple intermediaries between you and another host. It is best to find a website hosting with the least amount of links in-between. The less the passages information must travel through, the better off you will be.

Believe me when I say this, you definitely don’t want to be working with an Ecommerce host that uses equipments that Neanderthals used in their times. Make sure that they use the best of server equipments available.

The host should provide backup storage for your data, which could be accessed whenever needed, meaning that you are not interrupted in any way in your activities even in time of power failures, where backup systems could serve you adequately.

You might not be hindered in any way due to storage capacities, because most hosting companies usually start with providing 25mb storage, just enough to store around 500 pages ( impressive! isn’t it).

Having said all that, choosing an ideal Ecommerce host should not be all that difficult for you if you keep your requirements in mind. If you’re just starting out, you can register with a host for hardly $100 per month which is downright affordable and probably the best deal out there.

Domain Registration and Search Engine Marketing

January 9th, 2009

Does the length of your website’s domain name registration affect search engine marketing and results?

Should you renew your domain name for a long period of time? And if so, how long is long enough? If you want to stay ahead of your competition, then you might consider looking at the length of time your competitors have registered their domain names. If your competitors have generally registed their domain names for 1 -2 years, you should think registering your domain name for 5 or 10 years. While putting off your domain name’s expiration date might help your search engine rankings, keep in mind that this may be only a small victory when it comes to search engine technology.

Its good business sense to register a domain for at least 10 years. You don’t want to deal with the process   annual process of renewing them every year. It's best to obtain the domain names that you want to keep for a while and renew then on a 5 to 10 year plan.

If your domain name expires, there's a good chance that someone will register your domain name immediately after it expires. If, for whatever reason, you don’t renew your domain name, someone watching a ‘watch list’ of expiring domain names will try to capitalize on the online business that you’ve built over the years. They know that there is potential website traffic they can have simply by renewing your old domain name. By renewing your domain name for several years, your domain name won't expire for a while, and it won't be opened up to expired domain name buyers.

If you truely want to be ahead of the competition, you might thing registering or renewing your domain name for 100 years. Currently, Network Solutions (www.netsol.com) is the only registrar offering the 100 year option, which costs $999.00. GoDaddy (www.godaddy.com), now provides to register a domain for 10 years, at a cheap price of $6.95 per year.

Yes, you can lose critical positioning in the search engines if you don’t reregister your domain name in time. You may have to start the SEO process all over again!
