Understanding the Value of Site and Page Rank
April 21st, 2009
When some people talk about obtaining a high ranking in the search engines they are often puzzled about what it means to have a high rank verses having one keyword search term ranking high in the search results. The reality is that ranking well for a keyword search term may not ever send a single person to their site.
So, what exactly is a search engine ranking and how can it benefit your Internet business?
When someone uses a search engine like Google, they type in specific keyword search terms in order to find websites that contain information related to their keyword search. The results of that keyword search is a listing of websites that contain related content of the keyword searched.
Many times this is where the confusion starts. If a site appears in the top of these results some might think this means their site has a high rank. However, obtaining a high position does not mean the site is ranking well. It simply means it ranked well for a single search term.
I personally like to refer to each of these results as page positions because a few years back Google introduced a system that gives each page of every website a page rank. And it can become confusing to talk about achieving a high page rank when it can refer to either a high page position or a high Google PR (page rank).
It may be more helpful to think of ranking in a more general sense. A site that ranks well will have many traffic generating keyword search terms that obtain a high page position in the search results
Let’s get back to obtaining a high page position in the search results. Many SEO savvy marketers will gain new clients that want to obtain a higher page position in the search results by promising them a “high rank”. Included in this promise is offering to help their website rank well for search terms that include the name of their City and State. The price for this service can be anywhere from $60.00 a month to thousands of dollars a month.
If your site ranks well due to 20 keyword search terms, you need to know the value of those keyword search terms. What a business owner needs to understand is that obtaining a high page position for any keyword search term is only beneficial if it is a keyword term or phrase that their clients are using to find their type of business.
How many people in San Francisco use the keyword search term, “Sam’s pest control, San Francisco, CA”? Most likely only people who already know about Sam’s pest control.
However, if someone lives in San Francisco and is looking for this type of service they are more likely to use the keyword search term, “Pest control S.F. or San Francisco pest control”. Now you can see the difference between a valuable keyword search term and a worthless one.
The fact is any SEO savvy person can help your site rank well for a whole keyword search terms that add little or no value to your site simply by adding the name of your business and the city and state to the keyword phrase. This little trick is something that can be done one time to your site with about 5 minutes spent off your site. I’ve seem many clients faces turn very red in anger after they understand just how much money they’ve wasted paying for SEO services like this.
The more you understand the basics of search engine optimization Knowing what SEO is and how it can help your search engine rankins will help you understand how to select a good SEO service.

The Difference Between a High Ranking SIte and Ranking High for Keywords
February 11th, 2009
When some people talk about obtaining a high ranking in the search engines they are often puzzled about what it means to have a high rank verses having one keyword search term ranking high in the search results. The reality is that ranking well for a keyword search term may not ever send a single person to their site.
It’s time to understand a few search engine optimization terms so that you can better understand what will actually improve your own search engine results.
In general a search is conducted in a search engine like Google using keywords that represent the information the user is seeking. In most cases the result is a listing of links to websites that contain content that is relative to their keyword search term.
Some people think of each listing as a rank. So, if your site comes up in the top number one spot, you’ve achieved a number one ranking. The results on this page are also referred to as page positions. Each link represents a page position. If your site is listed as the first link, than your site has a number one page position.
I personally like to refer to each of these results as page positions because a few years back Google introduced a system that gives each page of every website a page rank. And it can become confusing to talk about achieving a high page rank when it can refer to either a high page position or a high Google PR (page rank).
Perhaps it would do well to consider ranking in a more general way. A site that ranks well will have many traffic generating keyword search terms that obtain a high page position in the search results

On the other hand obtaining the number one position for the search term, “San Francisco Pest Control,” a keyword search term that people do type into Google could be worth the time, money and effort to achieve it.
Sam’s Pet Control, San Francisco, CA is very easy for any SEO savvy person to achieve. In fact it could be done in less than 15 minutes and the SEO scam artist doing it could continue to charge poor Sam a $64.00 monthly fee for seemingly maintaining that number one position month after month.
The more you understand the basics of search engine optimization the more equipped you will be to spend your money wisely on SEO for your own business website online. Learn more about Redding search engine optimization services at ReddingSEO.com.

An Outstanding Internet Solution for Business Owners
January 16th, 2009
What is the number one answer to making your business survive during difficult periods of economic recession? The answer may seem obvious. More customers.
If you make money selling products or services to local clients you are most likely seeing a serious dent in your profits. Even though these are hard times and customers are not spending money like they used to, you can still boost your profits.
How? By making your business stand out above your competitors. When it comes to visibility offline, everyone knows that having your business in a heavily trafficked part of town will bring reap much largerprofits than if your business was far from town where there was little if any traffic.
The same applies when it comes to gaining new customers by means of the Internet. In order to gain a substantial amount of new customers through the Internet, you need to have a website.
Yet, it is amazing just how many business owners do not have a website for their business. And although many people have taken that step and built a website for their business, they have no idea that their websites are invisibe to potentially hundreds if not thousands of new customers because their site is in a sense, invisible. They have totally overlooked the one thing that every website owner needs to do in order for their customers to locate them online.
What could make such a huge difference?
Search engine visibility. Google, Yahoo and MSN are three of the most used search engines online today. Your website may be listed in every one of these search engines. At this point you may be thinking, “My site is listed in those search engines.” However, there is a difference between being listed and being visible.
Let me give you an example. I live in Redding, Ca. The owners of Country Entrees happen to be friends of mine. They own a type of take and bake fresh food restaurant. The name of their restaurant is Country Entrees. However, the only way you will find that restaurant in Google is if you type in the actual domain name of their restaurant. You won’t find their website by typing in Redding take and bake restaurants. Low carb restaurants in Redding or Redding restaurants.
Even though Country Entrees can be found in Google by people who know the name of their restaurant, an Internet search in Google or Yahoo holds no value for acquiring new customers because their site has not been properly optimized for search engine traffic. In order to improve this situation a website owner needs to do one of two things.
- Learn how to optimize their website for search engine traffic and do it themselves.
- Hire a search engine optimization service to do it for them.
If you decide to learn how to optimize your website for the search engines, I have to warn you, it’s not easy, it will require a lot of time and research and even some experimentation.
In addition to the time you will spend learning how to do this, there are monthly chores that are required in order to maintain a good listing position in the search engines.
The time saving solution is to hire a search engine optimization specialist (SEO). A good SEO specialist will help you understand how to gain more visibility through keyword search terms.
Now that you understand a little more about how search engines can help your business become more visible, you may be wondering what the owners of Country Entrees will do to increase their own visibilty. At this time they are in the process of making the decision to hire our new Redding Search Engine Optimization team or simply leave things as they are. Time will tell.
I’ll be covering some tips on how to find a quality SEO specialist in my next article on search engine optimization.

Use Your SEO Skills for Local Profits
January 16th, 2009
Do you know basic SEO? Using your knowledge you can start a new service in your own home town helping local businesses gain visibility online. Most business owners are at a disadvantage in not understanding the value of search engine traffic. Your advantage is having the SEO skills that 99% of the people who need it, don’t have.
I started my own Redding Search engine optimization business because I saw a need in my local area. Search engine optimization is an extremely valuable skill. Using your SEO knowledge you can help local businesses gain more visibility online. In fact, with the proper application of your SEO knowledge you can save local businesses a lot of money paid out to online services that add little if any value to their business.
One of my clients, we’ll call him Tom, owns a local flower shop. Tom pays $100.00 a month for a listing in an online directory for flower shops. I asked Tom if he had any idea of how much Internet traffic he was getting from the search engines due to his listing in this directory. He said, “Umm… I’m not sure.”
This is not surprizing at all. And it is why quality SEO services are a very needed service. Just because someone knows what Google is, it does not mean they understand the value of a proper listing. Let me show you what I mean.
In the next few minutes I was going to prove to Tom that his $100.00 a month was going right into the trash can. Sad, but true. It’s one of those times where you want to say, “Brace yourself, this is going to smart a little.”
The first thing I did was show Tom what a potential customer would find when conducting a search in Google for his type of business. The goal was to find his business in Google by finding a listing of the flower directory using our city as part of the keyword search term. The reason this is so important is because when people are seeking local businesses they will most often use the name of the town or city in their search.
For instance someone looking to buy flowers in Redding might conduct a search using the following keyword phrases in Google; Redding flower shops, where to buy flowers in Redding, flower shop in Redding.
We tried many different keyword combinations and the flower shop directory where Tom was listed never showed up. I have to admit that I was very surprized that even I couldn’t find the directory. And I actually know what I’m doing.
This is very sad. The problem here is that anyone can set up a business and offer their services to someone who really doesn’t understand the value of that service. If someone does not understsand the difference between a valuable search engine listing and one that resembles that of a pile of dog doo, then they surely wouldn’t know when they’re stepping in it. As in the case of Tom, he was not only stepping it it, he was paying to step in it month after month.
Tom was shocked. He had no idea that paying $100.00 a month for his listing was brining him absolutely no traffic from the search engines. This is not a unique situation. Most people in Tom’s situation are in the same boat as he was.
Now that I had Tom’s full attention, I could offer him my SEO services. I know exactly how to get his website listed so his local customers can find him. It’s a simple matter of optimizing his website and some additional SEO that will require a little offsite work.
Instead of paying $100.00 a month to be listed in a directory that no one will ever find, Tom’s is paying me $100.00 a month to get his site properly listed in Google for local customers looking for his type of business. In this case, I wasn’t even asking Tom to spend any more money than he was already spending. This decision did not require any effort, the answer was an easy, “yes, I want to hire you”.
I have already proven myself with several other clients having a number one listing in Google, MSN and Yahoo so it was not hard for Tom to see how I could help him too. If you have not established your skills online yet, simply offer your clients the first 3 months free. It should not take you longer than a few months to establish any local business a first page listing in Google using sound “white hat” SEO tactics.
If you understand how to properly optimize a website you can help any local business gain a better local listing in the top search engines like Google and Yahoo. Depending on the type of business you may never have to do anything more than optimize their website. Even if your client wants to tackle some keyword search terms that are more competitive, you can tackle this using content management and charge an addition fee as necessarry.
This truly does not require you to be a savvy sales man or woman. Today it is vital to have your offline business properly listed in the top search engines.. if you come across someone who is totally Internet challenged, you can still show them exactly how valuable this is. Simply ask for 5 minutes of their time. Bring your own PC and Internet access if they don’t have it. You can even meet at a local coffee shop with wireless Internet access.
It was very easy for me to start my Redding search engine optimization services. If you already know SEO, this just could be the perfect time to open up your own SEO services and BYOB today.

What is PR or PageRank?
January 16th, 2009
Many people building their web sites are concerned with PageRank, which is a number value that Google applies to online page content As a web site that contains quality content ages, it can increase in PR. While good content can and will help increase your PR, other things factor into the picture. Google has created a GoogleBot, which is a robot that spiders all online content in order to decide how to include it into their search engine results. This robot considers a variety of elements that help it determine just how relevant and valuable your content is.
A brand new web site starts out with zero PR. Over time it can reach a higher PR if the content is managed well and others think highly enough to link to that content. However, a high PR does not always mean high search results. A site with a zero PR can be positioned higher due to a variety of reasons, including the content being deemed more relevant. There may not always be a visible or viable reason as to why one site achieves a higher position in the search results.
Google no longer places as high a value on the PR of a site than it used it. It is still a factor, but there are many other important parts to consider in your quest to achieve a higher page position in the search engine results. Even though this is true, people are still trying to manipulate their PR using illegal techniques that will in time result in penalties or removal from Googles search results completely.
It is interesting to note that Google now has a total of 200 different elements that make up their algorithmic equations. Although Google still give PR more value then most other components, it should not be at the top of your list for building a quality site that will reap higher positioning search engine rewards. Google tries to understand the relevance of your sites content by taking into consideration all 200 components including what other people think of your sites content.
One of the most important things you can do to build your sites PR is to provide relevant quality content. It is the springboard to a successful long-term search engine solution.
Let’s consider two important parts that make up a valuable addition to the search engine results.
1. Quality and relevance for your reader is the first consideration. Making sure that the GoogleBot can understand that information is also important. This is where a good understanding of SEO comes in handy. People actually pay a monthly service fee to keep up with good SEO techniques. Yet, the fact is, Google does not hide any of their requirements. In fact, it’s all free. Just visit Google and you can learn just about anything you need to know to help increase your sites search engine results.
2. Acquiring referral links or “back-links” from other sites that are related to your sites content is the second part. Don’t be fooled into believing that using techniques to fool the GoogleBot offer you anything more than temporary results.
The right way to achieve back-links is through good SEO habbits. Joining social networks, writing quality content and submitting it to article directories or sites with similar content will help you obtain natural quality links.
Buying your way to the top is a bad idea. People who sell back-links do so by way of Link Farms. Avoid paying for this type of service. Once Google locates these types of services all links are then recorded. If the trail of links leads to your site, it could result in your site being penalized and or removed.
If you have the opportunity to read the webmasters guide from Google, take note of how they are working to stop the practice of PR and search engine results manipulation. There is no need to worry if you simply work at offering your visitors the relevant quality content they seek. Using these methods will help your site gain a higher PR over time and the results will be long term and rewarding.
